According to the Human Development Index (HDI) Mali is listed as one of the poorest countries in the world, ranking 178 out of 182. 57 percent of Mali is in the Sahara Desert. In general, the country’s water resources are unevenly distributed. Other challenges Mali is facing that the climate is unpredictable, which can vary between extreme drought and heavy rainfall. Over 20 percent of all deaths occur due to inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene. IAAAE’s Water For Life team has been active in Mali since 2007 with the aim to provide clean water and sanitation even in the most difficult parts of this nation.
What we did
Since 2007 Water For Life is active in Mali. We have successfully established local teams there who rehabilitate and maintain water wells, which were installed by IAAAE. WFL Mali’s target is to rehabilitate at least 50 wells but most often we exceed those numbers.
This project in Mali we were able to help over 37,000. Water For Life’s presence has benefited over 240,000 people.
